Friendship Day: Books with Two Authors

Friendship Day is the first Sunday in August. It started in the US in 1935. (Don't confuse it with the UN International Day of Friendship which started in 2011 and is on July 30.)

To celebrate, we're looking at books that have multiple authors. Most are books are told in alternating voices, with each author writing a different character.

David Levithan is the king of this.

Invisibility by Andrea Cremer and David Levithan. Stephen is invisible. He was born that way and, at this point is used to it, until he meets Elizabeth. Elizabeth is happy to have moved to New York where she can just blend in, and then she meets Stephen, and she's the only one that can see him.

Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. It has always been Naomi and Ely, Ely and Naomi. The two of them have survived everything, until Ely kisses Naomi's boyfriend and it all falls apart. Naomi's been saving herself for Ely, but her gay best friend will never love her the way she loves him. Naomi and Ely aren't sure how to live life without each other, but they may have to. Cohn and Levithan also co-wrote Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist and Dash & Lily's Book of Dares.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan. Two high school students, both named Will Grayson, are having a horrible night when they meet. Then one Will Grayson starts dating the other Will Grayson's best friend. There's a girl named Jane, who has a boyfriend. There's a musical written, directed, choreographed, etc etc etc and starring Tiny Cooper, the said boy/best friend and the gayest large person on the plant, or the largest gay person.

Scrambled Eggs at Midnight by Brad Barkley and Heather Hepler. Calliope is sick of moving around and living in a tent with her Ren Faire mother, eliot misses life before his father opened his religious fat camp. Together, they might just find themselves. Barkley and Hepler have also written Jars of Glass and Dream Factory.

The Half-life of Planets by Emily Franklin and Brendan Halpin. A sweet love story told in alternating chapters and voices, Lianna is spending the summer in the lab, not thinking at all about boys since someone called her a slut. Hank is spending the summer working at the record store, using his encyclopedic knowledge of music to help him earn enough money to buy the guitar he has his eye on. Franklin and Halpin also wrote Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom.

Notes from the Blender by Trish Cook and Brendan Halpin. Declan likes Finnish death metal, violent video games, internet porn, and Neilly. Neilly is the gymnast and is at the top of the school's hierarchy. Their parents are about to get married, and they're about to start living together. Cook and Halpin also wrote A Really Awesome Mess.

The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler. In 1996, Emma gets an AOL CD-ROM in the mail and gets the internet for the first time (yes kids, this was a thing). But, when she and boy-next-door Josh get online, they find Facebook, from 2011 and get a glimpse into their future. Josh's life is fantastic, but Emma's not so much.

Eve and Adam by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. Applegate and Grant retell the story of Adam and Eve, but this time in present day. After Eve is in a car crash, her mother has her recover at her genetics lab, where Eve starts creating the perfect boy.

Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian. Kat, Lillia, and Mary live in a postcard-perfect tourist island, but they have need for revenge. When they band together, it might just be possible. The first in a series, Fire with Fire comes out later this month.
